When money back are “guaranteed”… are they really?

Most hosting companies nowadays do guarantee money refund within 30 or 90 days, if you were dissatisfied with the server. This sounds great, as if you don’t lose anything by trying… Not always. Over half a year ago I signed up with one very very very well known hosting company but for ethical reasons I will not reveal the company’s name.

Anyway, after I used the hosting for a few weeks andsuffered frm continues downtimes , which definitely fell below the 99.9% uptime guarantee, I decided to cancel my hosting deal which was paid up anally in advance. I felt that the downtimes, which lasted for over an hour several times a day, resulted in about 85% uptime but wanted to see for myself and signed up for with one of the companies that provide website monitoring. I used InternetSeer for 2 years now to monitor my Liza Kliko’s official website and they have always been great in providing an accurate report.

So, after getting my report which proved the uptime is way below the guaranteed percentage, I came to cancel the hosting deal, claiming that the downtimes are unbearable and moreover do not live up to the promised guarantee. In their reply, they told me that I cannot cancel my annual deal just like that, I need a reason, as without a reason they cannot do it. Cool, I do have a reason though? Yes, I do, but I need to prove it. Okay, I have the report, what other proof do they want other than just visit the site often and see for themselves that it’s down a lot. Oops, no, InternetSeer’s report is not a proof, as they do not accept reports from third parties. They are not trustworthy… Sure, and their guarantee is!

Bottom line is, as you can guess, I did not manage to cancel the deal as I couldn’t find a good enough reason that I will be able to prove been annoying without involving third parties. So whatI have learnt from this, when yu sign up, check the Terms of Use and conditions under which they might be kind enough to consider canceling your registration. Some webhosts say they will refund the money without reasons, while other, in these tiny light gray letters against white, say that you’d need to prove your dissatisfaction beyond any reasonable doubt :D
